EU Digital Product Passport QR codes
Under the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation, products sold in the EU will need a Digital Product Passport reachable from a data carrier on the product — in practice a QR code using GS1 Digital Link. The QR doesn't hold the data; it links to a hosted passport with tiered access.
Who and when
- Batteries — EV, industrial and light-transport batteries > 2 kWh from 18 February 2027.
- Textiles & apparel — delegated act ~2027, obligations realistically 2028–2029.
- Electronics, furniture, tyres, steel, chemicals — following waves.
What the passport page must carry (typical)
Manufacturer, country of origin, materials and recycled content, hazardous substances, repair and disassembly info, carbon footprint, certifications, and for batteries: chemistry, capacity, expected lifetime, state of health hooks.
How we implement it
- Product record per GTIN with passport fields and GS1 link types.
- GS1 Digital Link QR (optionally per lot/serial) printed on pack or label.
- Resolver on your domain → public passport page with schema.org JSON-LD, plus linkset for machines.
- Routing rules to serve country-specific pages; workflows to alert on recall status changes.
